The vulva is the area of skin and its structures that stretches from the pubic hairline in the north to the anus in the south and is bordered on each side by the “lips” called the labia.
As this is mainly skin, the ailments we see affecting this area are mainly dermatological. From simple things like thrush or dermatitis to more worrying things such as lichen sclerosus, VIN (pre-cancer), or vulval cancer.
If you have persistent itch or pain in this area, especially if simple treatments like thrush medication or avoiding soaps have not made a difference, then it might be worth having it looked at, especially by someone trained to treat vulval skin conditions.
Dr. Singh is a member of ANZVS and has a special interest in the diagnosis and management of vulval skin conditions.
